The El Toro Y is a freeway triangle in the United States . It is located in the south of Orange County in the state of California after Irvine . At the triangle, Interstate 405 branches off as the San Diego Freeway from Interstate 5 , which is also known as the San Diego Freeway south of the triangle and is called the Santa Ana Freeway to the north . The Y is derived from the shape of the triangle.

To the northwest of the triangle between the interstates is the Irvine Spectrum Center , to the north is the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro .

With a traffic of 100,000 to 350,000 vehicles per day, El Toro Y is one of the busiest roads in the world. In 1993, the California Department of Transportation began expanding the transportation system in the greater Los Angeles area . In this project, El Toro Y was also expanded and, for example, got special lanes such as the HOV lanes . After four years of construction, the sorting room on Interstate 5 south of the triangle, with up to 26 lanes on multiple lanes, became one of the widest streets in the world. In addition, toll roads such as California State Route 73 , which opened in November 1996, and California State Route 241 were established .
