Elands Bay (English; Afrikaans : Elandsbaai ) is a coastal town with 1,525 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the municipality of Cederberg , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is about 80 kilometers north of Saldanha and 220 kilometers north of Cape Town .

Elands Bay is home to the Bobbejaansberg Tunnel, the only tunnel on the 800-kilometer Sishen – Saldanha railway , which was built to transport ore from the inland.

The name refers to the Eland antelopes that used to live here .

Rock carvings in the caves of Elands Bay
  • Lobster (English: Crayfish , Jasus lalandii ); between Elands Bay and Lamberts Bay there is one of the most productive fishing areas in South Africa
  • Rock carvings in the caves of the nearby Bobbejaansberg, which, as well as excavations, prove the settlement for around 15,000 years
  • Verlorenvlei ( RAMSAR ), a long wetland area
  • Whale watching from August to November
