Elastomer pump

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As elastomeric pump or elastomeric pump system one used in medicine infusion pump designated for single use that is independent of external energy sources, safe and uncomplicated infusion allows medication at the clinic and at home.

functionality

When the fluid to be infused is filled, the elastic material of an elastomer balloon expands and builds up pressure that does the pumping work. A flow limiter, a fine capillary made of glass or plastic material, determines the infusion rate, so that no adjustments by the doctor or the patient are necessary. Depending on the make and application, flow rates between 0.3 ml / h and 250 ml / h and periods of time from a few minutes to several days can be selected. Since the pre-set infusion rate can be disturbed by external factors (especially the temperature), the accuracy of elastomer pumps is not sufficient for all areas of application.

Areas of application

The most common areas of application are the outpatient infusion of drugs or antibiotics used for antineoplastic chemotherapy (mostly 5-fluorouracil , more rarely trabectedin ) . As part of the patient-controlled pain therapy (Patient Controlled Analgesia; PCA) pump elastomer used additionally have a control unit which allows the patient to affect the flow to a limited extent even. Elastomer pumps are also used in the context of regional anesthesia instead of electromechanical pumps, where multistage elastomer pumps with three or more flow rates are also used.

In a small study, chemotherapy patients preferred the elastomer pump over a conventional mechanical pump system. The main reasons given for this are the lower weight, the smaller dimensions, the better suitability for everyday use and the ease of use.

Makes

Elastomer pumps are available from a number of manufacturers. Examples are Accufuser® (Woo Young Medical; distributed by WYM Germany), CareVis® (Promecon) , Easypump® II (B.Braun), Folfusor®, Infusor® and Intermate® (Baxter), Neofuser® (S&S Med, im Distribution by Smiths Medical) or Surefuser® (Nipro; distributed by medac), AutoFuser® (ACE Medical; distributed by OMT and OncoMedical) or Dosi-Fuser® (Leventon SAU, distributed by Promecon).
