history

Elbenau was first mentioned in 1269 in a document from the diocese of Magdeburg. Proven variations of the place name are Elvenow (1311), Elvenowe (14th / 15th century), Elluenowe (1343), Elbenawe (1419), Elvenow (1478), Elbenaw (1529), Elbenau (1725, 1753, 1758). The place name goes back to the location in the Elbe.

In 1656 there was a witch trial against Dorothea, widow of Hans Curt in Elbenau . Its outcome is unknown.

In 1745 the Protestant Church of St. Pankratius was completed as a replacement for a previous building located in the same place.

Until 1806 Elbenau belonged to the Kurkreis , in which an office Elbenau existed. Remnants of Elbenau Castle could still be seen until around 1800. The stones of the castle were later removed and reused for other buildings, the so-called castle hill has now been completely plowed over. During the French occupation, Elbenau was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia .

From 1816 to March 31, 1913 Elbenau belonged to the district of Jerichow I , after which a district change took place in the district of Calbe a./S. and the place was incorporated into Schönebeck together with Grünewalde on April 1, 1913, as a prerequisite for the approval to build the Elbe bridge . At that time the village had about 550 inhabitants.

In 1875 the Pretziener weir and the associated flood canal were completed. Since then, the Old Elbe has not flowed past Elbenau anymore. Until then, part of the Elbe water flowed through the Old Elbe, which branches off at Pretzien and is partly navigable.

From around the second half of the 19th century, with the onset of industrialization, an excursion culture for workers developed. Because of the forest areas on the East Elbe side and the easy accessibility, first via the ferry connection, later via the Elbe bridge, Elbenau became a popular excursion destination for the people of Schönebeck. Several excursion restaurants in Elbenau and the surrounding area invite you to go on excursions, e.g. B. the inns Goldene Blume and Zur Stadt Schönebeck . From Elbenau you can reach other destinations in the area (e.g. Calenberge , Pechau , Gommern , Alte Fähre) on foot and later by bike . This tradition has been preserved up to the present day.

After the completion of the Schönebecker Elbe bridge, Elbenau was connected to the power grid from Schönebeck in 1912 via a cable laid under the Elbe bridge.

Towards the end of the Second World War , on April 13, 1945, fighting broke out in Elbenau between units of the American 2nd Armored Division and parts of the Wehrmacht's "Scharnhorst" Volksgrenadier Division .

In 1998 Elbenau was included in the village renewal program of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Numerous streets and buildings were renewed. In 2014 a cemetery was set up in Elbenau .

The population density of the place is 83 inhabitants per square kilometer. 0.48 square kilometers of the local area are built on.
