Justus Christian Thorschmidt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Justus Christian Thorschmidt (born February 23, 1688 in Somsdorf ; † July 10, 1750 in Annaburg ) was a German local historian who worked as a Protestant pastor.

In Zedler's Universal Lexikon Thorschmidt is referred to as the Welt-Weissheit Magister and his curriculum vitae is presented extensively, but the memory of this historian of the 18th century had already faded for a century. His numerous publications hardly meet today's scientific standards.

Life

Thorschmidt was born in Somsdorf as the son of the pastor Magister Christian Thorschmidt. His mother was the sister of the pastor of the Thomaskirche Leipzig , born Sieber. He began studying theology at the University of Wittenberg in 1707 and successfully passed his master's degree in 1709. From 1710 to 1721 he worked as an adjunct at the Wittenberg University before he was called to Plötzky as pastor .

In 1725 Thorschmidt became pastor in the city of Annaburg , where he worked until the end of his life.

Works

In Zedler it says: He has made a name for himself in the academic world through various writings and dissertations. This is followed by a list of 20 printed and four Thorschmidt manuscripts.

His main work is considered to be: Antiquarius ecclesiasticus Saxonicus or the Saxon Cur-Creyßes Church antiquities and memorabilia, in which of the antiquity of every place, foundation and endowment of their churches, […] identical secular stories and the like. State, regents ... finally also Actis literariis [...] along with many Observationibus ... acted in a certain order, also a good supply a bit without. u. rare Diplomatum ecclesiasticorum ... is brought to light , Leipzig 1732

His treatise on the history of Plötzky , Pretzien and Elbenau Antiquitates Plocenses et adiunctarum Prezzin et Elbenau comes from his time as a pastor in Plötzky . Leipzig, 1725. (In German translation and with annotations: Martin Jordan: Altertümer von Plötzky, Prezzien and Elbenau . August Hopfer Verlag Burg, 1939).
