Saint Pancratii Church

The Sankt-Pancratii-Kirche , also known as Sankt-Pankratius-Kirche , is the Protestant church in the village of Elbenau in Saxony-Anhalt , which belongs to the town of Schönebeck (Elbe) .

Architecture and history

The half-timbered church was built in 1743 as a successor to a smaller church. On the west side of the roof of the church, which was built on a rectangular floor plan, there is a roof turret with an octagonal lantern . It was restored at the end of the 20th century. In addition, a community room was added to the north of the church.

Interior design

Inside the church there is a three-sided gallery protruding on the west side , with an organ from 1874 (presumably master organ builder Focke). The ceiling of the nave is designed as a beam ceiling. The pulpit altar with marbled wooden columns and a baroque wooden cross with a figure of Christ is remarkable . The altar stone comes from Prignitz and consists of the grave slab of Prince Heinrich who died in 1259. The prince's further name is no longer legible. In addition, on the west wall of the church there are other grave slabs from the 17th century, such as a figural tombstone of the bureau chief David von Born, who died in 1607 . On the northern wall there are parts of the former choir stalls of the Plötzky monastery . In the sanctuary there are two priechen with wooden bars to the left and right of the altar .

Crypts under the church floor

During a renovation in 2010, nine tombs , probably from the 17th century, were rediscovered. The brick vaulted tombs, in which the bones of former Elbenau officials are said to lie, came to light under bricks in monastery format and gravel . After their location had been measured, the tombs under the newly built floor were left in the state in which they had been found. One of the tombs in which David von Born, who died in 1607 from the Electorate of Saxony in Elbenau, is buried, was opened and examined in 1939 after the floor was lowered.
