Elati (Lefkada)

Elati ( Greek Ελάτη ( f. Sg. ), Actually 'fir', also Stavrota Σταυρωτά ( n. Pl. )) Is the name of the central mountain range on the island of Lefkada .

The limestone massif covers most of Lefkada. Its highest peak with a height of 1158 m above sea level is south of the place Englouvi (Εγκλουβή). A winding road connects Englouvi in the east with Chortata (Χορτάτα) in the west flank.

Most of the mountain is covered by thick vegetation. On the lower slopes, olives and cypress trees predominate, while the vegetation in the higher elevations changes into dwarf shrubs.

A 35.43 km² area around the summit is designated as an IUCN - biotope / species protection area with management . An approximately 13 km² area around Chortata has protection status as a Natura 2000 area .

The archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld , who identified Lefkada with the Ithaca from Homer's Odyssey, saw in the Elati the Ithakic mountain Nēritos (Νήριτος) mentioned by Homer.
