Elba Esther Gordillo (born February 6, 1945 in Comitán de Domínguez , Chiapas ) is a Mexican politician and was president of the teachers' union SNTE ( Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación ) from 1989 to 2013 .

Political career

Gordillo joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1970 , held various party functions and rose to become general secretary. This accumulation of offices made La Maestra one of the most influential politicians in Mexico. After losing the 2006 presidential primaries to Roberto Madrazo , she was expelled from the PRI in July 2006 for disloyal behavior. She joined the New Alliance (PANAL) party .

On February 27, 2013, she was arrested at Toluca Airport on charges of embezzlement of around 150 million euros .
