Elbe tideau center
The Elbe Tideauenzentrum is an extracurricular education and event center in the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg . It is located in the south-east of the Elbe island of the same name at the Bunthausen tip and provides information about the peculiarities of the fresh water tide, which is shaped by the tides . The center is operated by the Society for Ecological Planning eV (GÖP), which is also based here.
history
The Elbe Tideau Center is located in the old Stackmeisterhaus on the Bunthäuser Spitze. “Stack” is Low German and refers to the “staking” of the banks for attachment. The main task of the stack workers was to ensure and further develop the function of the Elbe as a traffic route.
In 2006, the Society for Ecological Planning opened the Elbe Tideau Center in this Stackmeisterhaus - this is less about the Elbe as a traffic route, but more about the Elbe and its bank areas in Hamburg as valuable natural and habitats: the freshwater tidal flats. The word fresh water tide is made up of the three words fresh water , tide and floodplain : The water of the Elbe, which flows in this section, is fresh water. The tide is another term for ebb and flow and floodplains are regularly called flooded riverside areas. A fresh water floodplain is a bank area that is regularly flooded by fresh water.
Specialty
The Elbe Tideau Center is the only information center on the fresh water tide in Hamburg and fresh water tides are a unique habitat in Europe.
With mostly self-built exhibits on local nature, the flora and fauna, the exhibition enables insights into the special features of this habitat and motivates you to try out and experience. Since 2014, the exhibition rooms in the old Stackmeisterhaus have also included a nature experience area in the outdoor area with exhibits on tide, dike construction and river regulation as well as a small pond, fruit trees and an insect hotel.
Groups can visit the center by prior arrangement. Events also take place regularly in the Elbe Tide Center. The program of events can be found on the homepage.
