The electricity works of the Canton of Zurich (EKZ), based in Zurich, are a Swiss energy supply company . EKZ employs around 1,324 people and has a pipeline network of 14,876 kilometers. It is an independent institution under cantonal public law. In the 2018/19 financial year, EKZ sold a total of 5443 gigawatt hours of electricity, mostly in the canton of Zurich. EKZ covers around 9% of the entire Swiss electricity demand.

Business result

In the 2018/19 financial year, EKZ achieved a company profit of 104.2 million francs on sales of 815.6 million francs. The EBIT amounted to 81.7 million francs (previous year: 71.1 million Swiss francs) and the financial result reached CHF 35.9 million.

Projects

The EKZ are committed to the implementation of the Federal Energy Strategy 2050 . This includes innovative projects such as the Smart Grid Laboratory (which also includes Switzerland's largest battery storage facility in Volketswil), the solar test system on the Totalp above Davos, the solar test roof in Dietikon, the Smart City Tower in Wädenswil, and charging stations for electric cars Street lights and the traffic-monitoring light in Urdorf, which was awarded a Watt d'Or in the Energy Technologies category in 2018 .

Electricity production and procurement

EKZ produces around 30 gigawatt hours of electricity per year in its four hydropower plants (Waldhalde, Pfungen, Dietikon and Freienstein). EKZ's 69 photovoltaic systems produced 11.0 gigawatt hours of electricity in the 2018/2019 financial year. EKZ procures most of its energy on the open market. The electricity tariffs are among the cheapest in Switzerland.

Public economic principle

EKZ operates according to a public service principle. In the 2018/19 financial year, the customer bonus was CHF 28 million. In addition, voluntary compensation payments totaling CHF 11.4 million were paid to the communities that were directly supplied.

Business areas

The EKZ has the following business areas:

  • Energy: Energy procurement, sales, product development and energy consulting, prosumers, electromobility, smart home
  • Energy contracting: heating and cooling supply without financial and technical risks for the customer
  • Renewable energies: Production development of renewable energies in Germany and abroad (see also EKZ Renewables AG)
  • EKZ Eltop: electrical installations, building automation, telematics, smart home , with over 30 branches throughout the canton of Zurich; Eltop has been operating as a public limited company since October 1, 2018
  • Grid: Energy distribution: planning, construction, maintenance and expansion of the distribution network infrastructure, smart grid, smart energy
  • Network services: Services for power plants as well as industrial and commercial companies, Smart City

Holdings

The EKZ Group includes various subsidiaries in which the parent company EKZ holds more than 50% of the voting rights or with which there are contractual agreements:

  • EKZ Eltop AG is an electrical installation company with over 30 branches throughout the canton of Zurich as well as a branch in Menzingen and Einsiedeln. EKZ Eltop plans, creates and maintains all kinds of electrical installations for private individuals and companies. This also includes charging solutions for electromobility. EKZ Eltop AG has been an independent stock corporation since October 1, 2018 and is 100% owned by EKZ.
  • Certum Sicherheit AG carries out safety tests on electrical low-voltage installations, offers training courses and advises customers on questions about electricity. EKZ has a 70% stake in Certum.
  • EKZ Einsiedeln AG is 100% owned by EKZ and has taken over the tasks of distribution network operator in the Einsiedeln district from them. EKZ Einsiedeln AG owns the entire power distribution network in the Einsiedeln district, the Einsiedeln and Freienbach substations.
  • EKZ Renewables AG is 100% owned by EKZ. It acquires and holds stakes in power generation plants abroad that produce renewable energy. The focus is on the areas of wind energy (onshore), solar thermal power plants and photovoltaics.
  • Enpuls AG takes care of the “meter-to-customer process” for EKZ, from meter to billing and customer service. Enpuls is a 100% EKZ and offers its services throughout Switzerland.

EKZ holds shares in various companies with fewer voting rights. The most important are Repower (29.8%) and Axpo Holding (18.4%; the Canton of Zurich holds a further 18.34% in Axpo Holding).
