Elektro Music Department (EMD) is a minimal techno label from Berlin founded in 1995 and is considered "one of the most style-defining labels in techno history". The Berlin-based Swiss minimal artist Daniel Pflumm is responsible for the entire artwork for the label .

background

In the beginning, the label was about the connection between art and club life. Connected was the Berlin “micro club” Elektro , which had held performances by international DJs and technoacts at Mauerstraße 15 in Berlin since 1992 until the building was demolished in 1995. The successor club at the end of the 1990s was first the Panasonic , then the Init , both in Berlin, Mitte.

“Radical reduction of the tracks to the essentials was a trademark of the label back then. The music was produced by Klaus Kotai and Mo Loschelder (Kotai + Mo). Klaus Kotai came from the Disko B label in Munich and Mo worked with him for the first time in the studio. The visual and visionary artist Daniel Pflumm created the artwork and produced a video clip for each release. A special gimmick was the display of the telephone numbers of artists at the time. "

“The impression of having a little graphic work of art in hand with every cover certainly contributes to the reputation of the label [...] The label represents a certain Berlin club model like no other. The connection between club and art, non-commercial business outside of the official structures, the identity-giving power of electronic music for an international community: from the mid-1990s onwards it all took on a certain classic form with the Elektro Music Department. "
