Eleni Mavrou ( Greek Ελένη Μαύρου ; * on 1961 in Kyrenia , Cyprus ) is a Greek Cypriot politician ( AKEL ). She became a member of the European Parliament in 2004 after Cyprus joined . She was the first woman to be mayor of Nicosia from 2007 to 2011 and the country's interior minister from 2011 to 2013 .

Eleni Mavrou belongs to the communist progress party Anorthotiko Komma Ergazomenou Laou (AKEL). For this she sat from 2001 to 2011 in the House of Representatives of Cyprus . In 2003 she was posted to the European Parliament as an observer . After Cyprus acceded on May 1, 2004, she became a member of Parliament and the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left .

Mavrou successfully ran for the office of mayor of Nicosia in 2006 and held this position from January 2007 to December 2011. After the banking crisis in Cyprus, she was Interior Minister in the cabinet of Dimitris Christofias II from August 2011 to February 2013 .
