Elgin and Havelock Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Elgin and Havelock Railway was a railway company in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . It was founded in 1876 as the Elgin Branch Railway and opened the line from Petitcodiac to Elgin that same year . In Petitcodiac there was a transition to the Intercolonial Railway . The company struggled with financial problems and was reorganized several times. From 1880 it traded under the Petitcodiac and Elgin Railway . In 1884 the extension went into operation beyond Petitcodiac to Havelock and the company changed its name to Elgin, Petitcodiac and Havelock Railway .

In October 1892 the company was foreclosed and the Elgin and Havelock Railway , founded on July 23, 1894, took over the route. On May 20, 1918, the Canadian government acquired the railway and incorporated it into the Canadian Government Railways , which shortly thereafter became the Canadian National Railways . The line was closed in 1993.
