The Petitcodiac catchment area

The Petitcodiac ( English Petitcodiac River ; French Rivière Petitcodiac ; informally Chocolate River ) is a Canadian river in southeast New Brunswick .

The river runs through Westmorland County , Albert County, and Kings County . The river flows into the Bay of Fundy in the Atlantic Ocean . Its catchment area is around 2000 square kilometers.

Due to the brown color caused by heavy sedimentation, it is also called the Chocolate River .

Tidal wave

The river had - until it was separated from the open sea by a barrage built in 1968 - one of the largest tidal waves in the world. The wave reached a height of one to two meters and a speed of 5 to 13 km / h. From 1968 the height of the tidal wave was only a few decimeters. It has increased again since the barrage was opened in 2010.

In the Bay of Fundy, into which the river flows, the tidal range is up to 15 meters.
