Eliška Misáková

Eliška Misáková (born October 12, 1926 in Kojetice , † August 14, 1948 in London ) was a Czechoslovak apparatus gymnast .

Life

Eliška Misáková grew up in Vyškov , where she attended secondary school from 1936 to 1944. After the end of the Second World War Misáková joined the Sokol gymnastics club. In 1947 she moved to Prague and joined the Sokol Vinohrady association. She qualified for the Olympics the following year and belonged together with her sister Miloslava Misáková and Milena Müllerová, Marie Kovářová , Božena Srncová, Olga Šilhánová, Zdeňka Honsová and Zdeňka Veřmířovská to the Czechoslovak gymnastics team at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London . After arriving in London, she suddenly fell ill. In her place, Věra Růžičková joined the team. While the Czechoslovak team won the gold medal, Eliška Misáková died at the same time in the Uxbridge hospital from a poliomyelitis infection that was incurable at the time . At the award ceremony, the Czechoslovak flag with black ribbon was hoisted. Eliška Misáková was also posthumously awarded the gold medal by the IOC.
