Elig was a Spanish motorcycle manufacturer based in Elche , Alicante province .

history

Elig was founded by Francisco Candela Mas, who had owned a workshop for the manufacture and repair of machines for the shoe industry in Elche since February 1942. Francisco Candela's hobby was motorcycles. After some successful participation in local racing competitions, he turned his hobby into a profession.

In 1953, he opened his motorcycle workshop under the “Elig” brand in Calle del Marqués de Asprillas 39 on the corner of Calle de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez . "Elig" was the official spelling for the city of Elche from the middle of the 15th century. Until 1932 there was controversy as to whether the Valencian spelling Elx or Elig should be used as the official variant in addition to the castellan designation that was valid in 1707 .

In June 1953 Candela began producing a small series of 38 cc two-stroke motor bikes of the type Mosquito . On April 25, his first model 125-19 with a 122 cc (10-M) engine from Hispano Villiers was completed. The 197-19 model with a 197 cm³ engine (6-M), also from Hispano Villiers , was added later . The slightly larger 197 model had a 15 liter tank, while the 125 model had a 10 liter tank. The 19 ″ wheels of the 197 were a little wider than those of the 125. Both models had a payload of 200 kg, with the 125 model weighing 80 kg being 15 kg lighter. The range was given for both models at approx. 195 km. From August 1955 a new front fork and a rear swing arm were used. 1957, Francisco Candela an application for approval of the fabrication of chassis so-called "Motocarros", ie the framework for motorized tricycles . At that time, the company's capital was 650,000  . Most recently, Miguel Candela, the founder's son, ran the business until it closed in 1966. A total of 652 Elig motorcycles were produced.

An Elig 125 of the first series from 1954 is exhibited in the Museo Vehículos Históricos Valle de Guadalest in Guadalest . Diego Mendiola, who also produces in Elche, built 29 under license from Elig in 1960 and another 18 motorcycles under his Diemen brand in 1961 .
