Life

Elisabeth Grabowski was born on June 13, 1864 in Ratibor, Upper Silesia. She had three sisters. Her sister Gertrud Grabowski was also a writer and her sister Hedwig Grabowski was a painter. Her father was a businessman, but began to work for the railroad, which meant that Elisabeth Grabowski often moved from a young age. He gave up his business and sold the house. They spent a time in Austria and 13 years in the Upper Silesian industrial area and then returned to Racibórz. The mother died early. After her father died due to a typhus epidemic, she started working as a teacher in Hungary. There she looked after a boy from six to twelve years of age. She began her writing career after moving to Berlin in 1896. However, due to various family circumstances, she was unable to work uninhibited there and had to interrupt her work frequently. In 1907 she published her first book The White Eagle . In 1915 she moved to Opole and settled in Sternstrasse (today ul. Reymonta).

Grabowski died of a heart attack on February 11, 1929. She remained unmarried and childless, her fiancé died in a mine accident. Elisabeth Grabowski was buried on February 14, 1929 in Opole, her last place of residence. Her grave is in the old cemetery at ul. Wrocławska (formerly Wrocław Street ). The modern tombstone in the form of an irregular hexagon, which tapers towards the top, was donated by the Association of German Writers - Gau Oberschlesien and had the inscription “here in god rests the writer Elisabeth Grabowski / + / geb. on June 13th, 1864 died on February 11th, 1929 / everything for the home / from your friends SdS Gau OS. “. The tombstone is no longer there today.

Her sister Hedwig published the book Die Volkstrachten in Oberschlesien from the estate of Elisabeth Grabowski .
