Elissar Zakaria Khoury (born October 27, 1972 in Deir el Ahmar in the Bekaa plain in Lebanon ), known as Elissa ( Arabic : إليسا), is a Lebanese singer.

biography

She started her career in 1998 with the hit Baddi Doob . Elissa has won three World Music Awards for Best Selling Artist in the Middle East and North Africa (2005, 2006 and 2010). All albums combined had sales of approximately $ 18 million. This made her one of the most famous Lebanese artists. Elissa is also one of the richest Lebanese singers; her net worth is said to be approximately $ 31 million.

Elissa began her career as a singer in the early 1990s on a talent show (Studio El Fan by LBC) in which she took second place. After a long absence from the public, she returned in 1998 with her Spanish-Arabic single Baddi Doob . Her first album, also called Baddi Doob , was one of the best-selling albums in Lebanon and the Middle East with over 1,500,000 records sold. The album's success led to her participation in the prestigious Cannes International Music Festival in 2000.

Her second project in 2000 was a duet with Ragheb Alameh called Betghib ​​Betruh . The song was also on Elissa's second album W'akherta Ma'ak , of which over 1,600,000 copies were sold. In 2001 she starred in Jordan's Fiesta Latina . She also appeared in the opening act for the British singer Sting when he was playing at the Pyramids of Giza. She was also the only Arab artist to sing in front of US President Bill Clinton at the Stars Charity Show in Dubai. Queen Rania of Jordan and the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rachid El Maktum, were also present at the event.

She later sang an Arabic-English song with Irish musician Chris de Burgh called Lebanese Nights , written, composed and marketed by de Burgh. He wrote the song during his last visit to Lebanon. He decided to sing the song with a Lebanese artist and chose Elissa. The song was recorded in London and released on de Burgh's 2002 album Timing is Everything .

Her third album, Ayshalak , was released in June 2002 and was supported by a video clip filmed by French director Fabrice Begotti; the make-up and clothing came from Christian Dior . Elissa was the first Arab woman to represent Christian Dior. The video and song were a huge hit and with the help of composer and arranger Jean-Marie Riachi, Elissa was able to land a new hit with Ayshalak's second single , Agmal Ehsas . This video clip was directed by a Lebanese director, Selim El Turk. Together, Elissa and Selim won the Murex D'Or for best artist and best video clip. The Turkish singer Emrah was also represented in this album.

In late 2002 she made the introduction at the opening of Kuwait's Virgin Megastore with Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the famous chain. Another great success for Elissa was her inclusion in the book 100 Pioneers of Lebanon , where her name appeared alongside artists such as Fairouz , Wadih El Safi and other well-known stars.
