An Elliator is a combination of a hydraulic excavator with a track drive and a forwarder . In addition to forest tractors, it can be used for logging work in forestry and forestry . Due to the large contact surface of its chassis, an Elliator should be able to be used in forest work in a particularly soil-friendly manner for wood harvesting and for moving wood to forest roads and wood storage areas. The machine was presented for the first time at the Interforst 2010 trade fair by EMB Baumaschinen ( New Holland ). Before that, a successful practical test was carried out at the Neureichenau forestry company of the Bavarian State Forests .

Comparison of working methods

Backing wood has always been a painstaking job. In forestry, the use of machines such as forwarders , wood harvesters and wood chip harvesters makes work considerably easier. The back of wood places high demands on the forest machines. The four- to eight-wheeled tractor move in the forest area mainly on forest roads and the specially cleared logging lanes . The high dead weight and the load point of the wheels vehicles cause major damage to the soil , the range of the track formation (ruts in the roadway) to the heave of the soil. Permanent technical use of the skidding lanes is therefore not guaranteed. Among other things, the track formation also greatly changes the course of the water from springs and surface water, which leads to increased soil erosion on slopes .

This means that protecting the forest floor has become an important issue. The Elliator with the appearance of an excavator and the substructure of a pendulous chain drive with loading area, crane, cable winch or other additional tools, distributes its weight over a larger contact area and thus the forest floor or the back alley is very spared and a constant technical drive on the back alley is guaranteed .

Equipment and area of application

A swinging drive ensures that the load is well distributed on the ground with good stability and ground clearance. To keep the load as horizontal as possible, the frame is floating. There are many options for equipping Elliators thanks to a modular system:

  • Double head winch,
  • Wood grapple,
  • Harvester head ,
  • Soil stabilizers,
  • Breaker spoon,
  • Clamp bank,
  • Auger for deep drilling,
  • Milling machine ,
  • Hammer,
  • Wood chipper,
  • Wood milling machine,
  • Mixer,
  • Demolition grab,
  • Extraction system,
  • Ram ,
  • Clearing rake,
  • Vibrating plate ,
  • Telescopic handle ,
  • Pliers,
  • Pulverizer,
  • Winch,
  • Variable transport system - roller bridges.

Depending on the place of use, other floor panels in different sizes or materials are used. The cabins can be raised. For working from a safe distance, there are radio remote control systems with a range of 150 m.

The Elliator can not only be used in forestry and logging technology, but also for pipeline construction, cable and Pipeline construction, demolition construction sites , underground construction, gardening and landscaping, motorway construction sites , work in moors and swamps, fence construction, disaster control , high-voltage line construction, road and path construction.

Low loaders are used to transport the Elliator .

Working method

The Elliator works mainly on back alleys. Due to its maneuverability and the low ground pressure , the damage to the sensitive forest floor is reduced to a minimum. In addition to the integrated cable winch, the harvester head, transport surface, tongs or other additional devices, the working device can be operated from a safe distance by radio control. The wood, whether short or long, is then loaded and transported to a storage location in the forest.

Effects on forest work

Due to its maneuverability and gentle movement, the wooden back elliator can be used in dense and extremely wet forest, as well as in the moor (low and high moor) and cover longer distances to storage areas. A constant technical inspection of the return route is guaranteed.
