Eleanor Elizabeth "Ellie" Chowns (born March 7, 1975 in Chertsey ) is a British politician ( Green Party of England and Wales ). From the 2019 European elections until January 31, 2020, she was a member of the European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group .

Life

education

Ellie Chowns studied geography, environmental science, and development science at the University of Sussex . She graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts. She then studied a Master of Professional Studies (MProf) in Sustainable Development at Middlesex University , which she graduated in 1998. Chowns received her PhD in International Development Studies from the University of Birmingham in 2014 , her dissertation is entitled “The political economy of community management: a study of factors influencing sustainability in Malawi's rural water supply sector”.

In addition to her academic career, she worked for several years for non-profit organizations, including Voluntary Service Overseas and Christian Aid . She also lectured at the University of Birmingham.

Political career

Ellie Chowns has been politically active since 2015. In 2017 she was elected as a councilor in the Herefordshire Council, where she headed the Greens. In the 2017 British general election , she ran in the North Herefordshire constituency and won 5.5 percent of the vote.

In 2019 she was re-elected for the municipal council with 78.6 percent of the votes. In the same year, her party nominated her for the 2019 European elections in the West Midlands European constituency. The Greens won 10.66 percent of the vote there, a mandate that Chowns accepted. In the European Parliament, she joined the Greens / EFA group , for which she was a member of the Committee on International Trade and an alternate member of the Development Committee .
