The Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Schule (EHKS) is a model elementary school in Darmstadt . The school was named after the politician Elly Heuss-Knapp .

Architecture and history

The two-story school building with a gable roof was built in 1954 and 1955 in the style of post-war modernism . The individual buildings are connected to one another by covered corridors. The schoolyards are located between the school buildings.

The first phase of construction was completed in 1954; the second in 1955. A third construction phase followed in 1962.

The Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Schule has been employed since 2015 as a typical example of the architecture of the 1950s and 1960s in Darmstadt under monument protection .

Cases of abuse

In September 2016, an independent commission commissioned by the Hessian Ministry of Education and Culture published an expert opinion in which the handling of cases of abuse that had occurred long ago by a pedagogical criminal teacher at the school was assessed. At least 35 students were affected. The commission, of which Brigitte Tilmann was a member, states that there was a failure "on the part of the teachers at the time, the school management and the school administration" in dealing with references to the sexual assaults committed by a teacher between 1961 and 1994 .

The victims, whose suffering was only partially dealt with in court, were awarded financial compensation of € 10,000 each by the Hessian state government , recognizing an “institutional and moral guilt”.
