Elongation
The term elongation (from the Latin elongare , literally "remove" or "keep away") is used in the following contexts:
- in astronomy the angular distance of a celestial body from the sun as seen from earth, see elongation (astronomy)
- in biology:
- the elongation of the amino acid chain during protein synthesis , see elongation (translation)
- the last [transfer] step during the so-called RNA biosynthesis , see elongation (transcription)
- In medicine, the apparent or actual increase in length of a blood vessel with a correspondingly tortuous course, for example the elongation of the descending aorta
- in physics (acoustics) the current deflection of an oscillation from its rest position
- In dentistry, the real or apparent extension of a tooth by "growing out" of the tooth socket
