Elpidios Brachamios
Elpidios Brachamios ( Middle Greek Ἐλπίδιος Βραχάμιος ; † after 1034) was a Byzantine rebel who rose against Emperor Michael IV in Antioch in 1034 .
Life
The Patrikios Elpidius was probably a confidant of Constantine Dalassenos , still under the emperor Basil II. To katepano had been appointed by Antioch, and could at that time as Taxiarch held office. In the spring of 1034 Elpidios, who belonged to one of the wealthiest families in the city, led a revolt by the Antiochenes, who revolted against the fiscal policy of the government led by Johannes Orphanotrophos and killed the imperial tax collector Salibas . The Katepan Niketas , like Johannes a brother of the new emperor, brutally put down the uprising. Elpidios and ten other wealthy Antiochenes were captured and transferred to Constantinople , where they were imprisoned for several years. Johannes Orphanotrophos also took the rebellion of Elpidios as an opportunity to banish the potential rival Konstantin Dalassenos on the charge of planning a usurpation against Michael IV and then to arrest him in Constantinople.
