The Elsensee belongs next to Butzer Lake and the Habermannsee linking Kaulsdorfer lakes . The body of water is located in the Berlin district of Mahlsdorf and is currently privately owned.
Emergence
The Elsensee originally came into being at the beginning of the 1980s as a gravel pit, from which sand and gravel were removed for the new development areas in Marzahn-Hellersdorf . After the dismantling stopped and all machines were removed, the pit filled with groundwater and rainwater for some time. Today the Elsensee is a natural biotope in which many animals and plants live.
use
The owner of the Elsensee would like to make the water available as an outdoor pool with water skiing facility for swimming and sports fans in the area. The project has been planned since 2001, but has not yet been implemented. According to EU guidelines, the water quality of the lake is not good enough to classify it as bathing water. Up until now, rainwater from the surrounding streets and squares has been channeled unfiltered into the lake, which increases the concentration of pollutants and increases health risks. The owner of the lakes is currently in a legal dispute with the country because the water law permit for the discharge of rainwater is missing.
