The Kaulsdorfer Lakes are a landscape protection area (LSG 41) in the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf in Kaulsdorf- Süd. The area includes the Butzer See , the Habermannsee and the Kaulsdorfer Busch , a small forest area with colonies of foliage. Elsensee , located in Mahlsdorf , is currently not part of the 95-  hectare landscape protection area that is made up of the Alt-Kaulsdorf road (federal highways B 1 and B 5 ) in the north, Kressenweg in the east, Lassaner Straße and the KGA 'Kaulsdorfer Busch' in West as well as Eschen-, Grenz- and Mannheimer Straße in the south.

landscape

The area around the Kaulsdorf lakes is valuable for the protection of nature and landscape, as it has a very diverse vegetation, which includes natural forest, willow bushes and meadows as well as banks overgrown with reed and some mighty pastures . The common fish species found in the lakes are eel , pike and roach .

To the north of the Kaulsdorf lakes is the Berlin balcony , which forms the transition between two natural areas created during the Ice Age : the Berlin glacial valley in the south and the Barnimer Platte in the north. From above there is a delightful view to the south with the lakes and the settlement areas of Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf in the foreground and the high-rise buildings of Köpenick and the Müggelberge on the horizon.

Emergence

In the 1930s, the Butzer See and the Habermannsee were created through the extraction of sand and gravel at the time, with the lakes being filled with groundwater flowing in. The Elsensee was only dredged in the 1960s.

use

The Kaulsdorf lakes area is used by the Kaulsdorf waterworks , which was built in 1916 and is located on the western edge of the Habermannsee, for pumping groundwater, which influences the water level in the lakes. As a result, the eastern part of the Habermannsee is separated from the western part by a narrow peninsula when the groundwater level is low; the result is the Kiessee, which is partially viewed as an independent lake. In addition, the forest area of the Kaulsdorfer Busch, which is made up of poplars , pines and spruces , is used for forestry.

hazards

In the summer months, the lakes are illegally used by bathers, although they are designated as a drinking water protection area. However, compliance with the associated bathing ban is not monitored. The damage to flora and fauna caused by misuse is a cause for concern. The drinking water gallery of the waterworks is also endangered by waste from the numerous guests. Therefore, all visitors to the area are requested not to bathe in the lakes, not to leave any rubbish behind and only to stay on the paths.

Sports

The cross-country run "Around the Kaulsdorf Lakes" takes place twice a year . The route leads around both the Butzer See and the Habermannsee.
