The Berlin balcony is an undeveloped slope on the border between the Berlin districts of Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf , where the height difference between the Barnim plateau and the Berlin glacial valley can be traced. As a one-off for Berlin, the transition was not built in here. The Barnim has a height of 57 m and the Berlin glacial valley is 42  m above sea level. NHN on. The eastern, larger slope is in Mahlsdorf, the western, smaller slope in Kaulsdorf.

Located directly on the south side of the federal highways B 1 / B 5 , which are routed on the same route , the Berlin balcony offers a clear view of the Elsensee and the Kaulsdorf lakes , the settlement areas from Mahlsdorf and Kaulsdorf to Köpenick and the Müggel Mountains .

The area borders in the east on the site of the waste disposal company ALBA , which was established in the early 1980s as a processing center for the VEB secondary raw material collection ( SERO ). In 2005, ALBA built what was then the most modern recycling plant in Europe. The Freie Schule am Elsengrund also borders the area in the south.

In 2004, a path supported by the EU with 900,000 euros was built across the eastern part of the Berlin balcony, which is part of the Am Barnimhang cycle and hiking trail that crosses the districts of Biesdorf , Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf . It begins at the Kressenweg / Elsenstraße intersection and leads to a centrally located lookout point. A wooden work of art is reminiscent of the post mill that stood there from 1808 to 1936. Even the Kaulsdorfer way , one of the 20 green main roads of Berlin, touched the Berlin balcony.

At the lookout point, the path divides and leads north to the B 1 / B 5, south to Elsenstrasse and east to the Mahlsdorf estate with the Wilhelminian style museum . The construction of a cycle path through the listed manor park caused criticism from the Förderverein Gutshaus Mahlsdorf e. V. It was agreed that the path through the park would only be accessible during the normal opening times of the manor house.

The area has been protected as the Barnimhang landscape protection area (LSG 53) since 2012 .

The slope is currently still used for agriculture.
