Elvina Makarian

Elvina Makarian ( Armenian Էլվինա Մակարյան , Russian Эльвина Макарян ; * 1947 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR ; † July 9, 2007 in Glendale , California ) was an Armenian jazz singer , songwriter and musician .

After training as a pianist at the Yerevan Conservatory, she became a member of Robert Amirchanjan's jazz combo at the age of 14 . In 1967 she worked in Constantin Orbelyan's Yerevan State Entertainment Band . In 1994 she settled in the USA, where she released three CDs. Two more albums are about to be released. She is considered one of the most important Armenian singer-songwriters.

Awards

As early as 1973 Elvina Makarian received the prize at the First World Music Awards in Moscow and was also honored in East Berlin. In 2002 she received the Armenian Music Award - The Stepan Lousikian Award - in the category Best Original Contemporary Album for the album For Love.
