Emanuel Gohle (born September 8, 1867 in Berlin ; † July 15, 1937 there ) was a German New Apostolic composer and songwriter .

Life

Emanuel Gohle joined a Baptist church after his military service . In 1896 he had first contact with the New Apostolic Church. He became a New Apostolic on February 22, 1897. Gohle studied music and became a teacher at the Berlin Conservatory . In the still young church he was commissioned to found and train choirs and to create songs for choir and community singing. Among other things, he worked in the community of Schwaan near Rostock, where he was temporarily also the choir director. The many songs he wrote and composed became an integral part of the New Apostolic musical culture.

Songs (selection)

  • I found salvation in Jesus
  • Take Jesus into your ship of life
  • Make me cleaner
  • A sea of love
  • Keep faithful to the Lord
  • Redeemed, saved
  • Do you know the friend

style

Emanuel Gohle was greatly influenced by the revival song of the US revival movement. He stayed true to this style well into the 20th century. His influence through the works of Bliss and Gebhardt is particularly evident in the harmony. In choosing the time he often used 6/8 and 9/8 bars; the former occurs very often in the revival song.

A peculiarity of the composer Gohle, however, was the increased use of triplets in songs of 4/4 time; you hardly ever find these at Bliss or Gebhardt. It could be a return to the common triplets in the revival song as sung in the United States in the 19th century.

Although Gohle composed at the turn of the century, he can be classified as a romantic. He is more of a late romantic than a late romantic, since he never gave up romantic stylism in favor of late romantic or even modern twists.

Emanuel Gohle is the epitome of grown New Apostolic music culture, as it existed before the new hymn book ( hymn book of the New Apostolic Church ) was published. Younger composers have meanwhile reinterpreted his songs and changed some of their harmony and melody. If you want to study Gohle's songs in the original, you have to fall back on the old hymn book ( New Apostolic hymn book ) or the choir folder (or the choir song book).
