Emanuele Severino (born February 26, 1929 in Brescia ; † January 17, 2020 there ) was an Italian philosopher .

Life

Severino studied at the University of Pavia , where he graduated from Gustavo Bontadini with a thesis on Martin Heidegger and metaphysics ( Heidegger e la metafisica ).

Then he was a freelance lecturer in theoretical philosophy , including at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. In 1962 he became professor of moral philosophy there until eight years later he was appointed to the University of Venice . There he taught theoretical philosophy again as a full professor until 1989.

Severino appeals to Parmenides and teaches, based on the principle of identity , that all things are eternal. Since Plato and Aristotle , nihilism has prevailed in European philosophy , since philosophy assumes that things arise out of nothing and can also fade into nothing again. Therefore, since Plato, European philosophy has been based on a fundamental error that can be overcome by returning to Parmenides.
