Gustavo Bontadini

Gustavo Bontadini (born March 27, 1903 in Milan ; † April 12, 1990 there ) was an Italian philosopher and is considered one of the main exponents of Neuthomism in the 20th century. From 1951 to 1973 he was professor of theoretical philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. Angelo Scola , Emanuele Severino and other Italian intellectuals are counted among his students .

biography

Gustavo Bontadini began to be interested in philosophy while he was still in high school, as he felt the need to reconcile his Christian faith with modern thinking. After graduating in 1921, he therefore enrolled at the recently founded Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, which at that time was not yet legally recognized by the Italian state. Bontadini received his doctorate in 1925 - the first graduate of the university. His dissertation Il mio contributo alla metafisica dell'esperienza was published in 1938 with the title Saggio di una metafisica dell'esperienza .

1940 Bontadini was appointed to a position as professor at the University of Urbino until he received the chair of theoretical philosophy at the University of Pavia in 1947. Here he met his most famous student, Emanuele Severino. Several publications date from this period: Studi sull'idealismo (1942), Dall'attualismo al problematicismo (1946), Studi di filosofia dell'età cartesiana (1947).

In 1951 he became professor of theoretical philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, where he had studied. During the years as a professor in Milan, the following works by Bontadini appeared: Dal problematicismo alla metafisica (1952), Conversazioni di metafisica (1971), Appunti di filosofia (1972).

In 1973, when he reached the age of 70, he handed over the chair of theoretical philosophy to Sofia Vanni Rovighi . Until 1978 he continued teaching at the same university. Gustavo Bontadini spent his last years in seclusion and died in his home in Milan on April 12, 1990.
