Embiotoca jacksoni is a fish from the surf perchfamily(Embiotocidae). He lives on the California coastfrom Fort Bragg to central Baja California and the island of Guadalupe . As a biotope they prefer rocky areas near kelp forests , and swim over sandy ground, in bays and in harbors. Embiotoca jacksoni can be found in small swarms, especially in shallow water, to a depth of no more than 46 meters, but mostly only to a depth of 6 meters.

A region of enlarged scales between the pectoral and pelvic fins is characteristic of the species . The longest hard rays of the dorsal fin are always shorter than the soft rays. The basic color is usually black, orange or red-brown. The flanks have nine brown or black stripes. The fins sometimes show blue spots, the pelvic fins are red or orange, the anal fin sometimes has blue or gold stripes. The lips are thick, orange, yellow, or reddish brown. The fish reach a length of 38 cm, a weight of 700 grams and an age of 10 years.
