Embolectomy
Embolectomy (also: thrombectomy , thrombendarterectomy ) is the medical term for the removal of an embolus or thrombus (blood clot). The removal is done as an open operation or with a balloon catheter . For this purpose, the balloon catheter is inserted into the closed vessel to behind the embolus, then the balloon catheter is inflated. The embolus can then be withdrawn by slowly pulling the catheter.
The first surgical operation methods for embolectomy in pulmonary embolism were mainly developed by Friedrich Trendelenburg and Martin Kirschner in the first quarter of the 20th century.
