The Emerald Fracture Zone (English for Emerald Fracture Zone is) an undersea transform fault in the Southern Ocean . It runs from the southwestern tip of the Campbell Plateau south to the northern tip of the Iselin Bank .
It was named in 1995 at the suggestion of the American oceanographer Steven C. Cande of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography . It is named after the brig Emerald , a sealer built in Providence in 1817 for the so-called Boston Expedition (1820-1821), which passed through this area in 1821. During this trip, the crew discovered an island that they named Emerald Island , but later turned out to be Phantom Island . The naming of the transform fault was confirmed in June 1997 by the US Advisory Committee for Undersea Features (ACUF).
