The Emigrant Bank Building is a New York City building constructed from 1908 to 1912 . Located on Chambers Street , it was designed by Raymond F. Almirall .

history

The Emigrant Bank was originally founded in 1850 under the auspices of Bishop John Joseph Hughes and the Irish Emigrant Society to store the fortunes of Irish immigrants . In 1908, the bank commissioned the construction of the Beaux Arts style building.

After about four years of construction, the building was completed in 1912 and, in addition to a richly decorated entrance hall with numerous marble uses, included skylights on which scenes from mining and agriculture could be seen. After the construction was completed, Emigrant Bank moved into the building and then used it as its headquarters for a long time. In the 1920s, the bank was considered the largest "savings bank" in the United States .

In 1965, the Emigrant Bank Building was acquired by the City of New York to replace it with a redesigned administration building. This was ultimately not built and the Emigrant Bank Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 25, 1982 . Today it serves as the office building of the city administration.
