Emiliano Mutti (* 1933 near Lake Orta ) is an Italian geologist and sedimentologist.

Life

Mutti grew up in a mountain village in the northern Apennines and studied geology at the University of Milan with a diploma in 1959. His thesis was on turbidites in the northern Apennines, and turbidites remained his specialty. He was then an assistant professor in Milan before joining Esso in 1965 at Esso's Production Research Lab in Bordeaux. In 1969 he became a professor at the University of Turin . In 1971 he received his doctorate there and was given a full professorship in 1975. Later he went to the University of Parma . In 2007 he retired.

He is mainly concerned with turbidites in the Spanish Pyrenees, the Apennines and Greece. He investigated their character as petroleum bedrock and their relationship to river and delta deposits. He also investigated the formation of deep-water turbiditic sediments at continental margins using reflection seismics.

In 2004 he received the William H. Twenhofel Medal and in 2012 the Lamarck Medal .
