Emilio Gutiérrez
Emilio Gutiérrez (* 1963 ) is a Mexican journalist who currently lives in the USA. He worked for the Mexican newspaper " El Diario de el Noreste ". After he received death threats from a general in the Mexican Army because he reported critical of them, he fled to the United States with his son.
Gutiérrez's application for asylum was denied in December 2017, to the dismay of Reporters Without Borders , who then demanded that he be granted asylum and ordered his immediate deportation. Gutiérrez claims that this amounts to a death sentence for him. During his appeal, Gutiérrez was sent to a detention center in Sierra Blanca , the conditions of which he describes as very poor.
Gutiérrez received the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award from the US Press Club in December 2017. The award was made via video conference.
