Emily Ayckbowm (born 1836 in Heidelberg ; died 1900 ) was the founder and first superior of the Anglican religious order, Community of the Sisters of the Church, founded in 1870 .

Life

She was the daughter of Rev. Frederick Ayckbowm, head of Holy Trinity Church in Chester . This was of German descent. When the parents visited Heidelberg, Emily was born there.

She first appeared in public when she and others volunteered to help out with the Chester cholera epidemic. In 1864 she founded the Church Extension Association , which was mainly active in charity, and in 1870 the Community of the Sisters of the Church . During her tenure as superior of the community, she was criticized. Archbishop Edward White Benson tried to intervene; however, Ayckbowm had no confidence in his views, nor did he trust her. She refused the help he offered. She removed his writings from the community reading. The reputation of the community within the Anglican Church is said to have suffered as a result.
