Edward White Benson
Edward White Benson (born July 14, 1829 in Birmingham , England , † October 11, 1896 in Hawarden , Flintshire ) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 until his death .
Life
Benson was born the son of the chemical manufacturer ( English chemical manufacturer of Birmingham ) Edward White Benson at 72 Lombard Street in Birmingham . He studied at Trinity College , Cambridge, where he graduated in 1852. His career began that same year at the Rugby School in Warwickshire . Shortly thereafter, he became a deacon before he was ordained a priest in 1857 . Prince Albert made him a Masters degree from Wellington College in Berkshire in 1859 , which was built in memory of Arthur Wellesley , the first Duke of Wellington .
He served as head of Lincoln Cathedral from 1872 to 1877 and was the first bishop of Truro from 1877 to 1882 . In 1880 he founded Truro High School for Girls.
On October 11, 1896, Benson died of a heart attack while visiting four-time Prime Minister William Gladstone . He was buried in a historicizing high tomb in the nave of Canterbury Cathedral. A plaque commemorates him in Trinity College, Cambridge.
Benson was married to Mary Sidgwick, sister of Henry Sidgwick , and had six children: Margaret , Mary Eleanor, Martin, Arthur Christopher , Edward Frederic, and Robert Hugh .
