Robert Hugh Benson (born November 18, 1871 in Wellington College in Crowthorne , Berkshire , † October 19, 1914 in Salford ) was an English priest and writer.

family

Robert Hugh Benson was the fourth and youngest son of Edward White Benson , Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral and later Archbishop of Canterbury , and his wife Mary. His older brothers were the writers Arthur Christopher Benson (1862–1925) and Edward Frederic Benson (1867–1940). One of the family's uncle was the philosopher Henry Sidgwick .

Life

Benson was educated at Eton College and then studied theology and classical philology at Trinity College , Cambridge . He was ordained a deacon in 1894 and began preaching in the Eton Mission, East End London, in 1895. In the same year he was ordained a priest of the Church of England by his father .

After his father's death in 1896, he went to Egypt at the request of the family . After his return he became vicar in Kemsing and the community aroused his interest in the theater. In 1898 he entered the House of the Community of Resurrection in Mirfield , an Anglican contemplative order that lived on the Benedictine Rule , but without the need to take solemn vows . He stayed there until 1903.

His emerging spiritual doubts about the authority of the Anglican Church, he presented in his autobiographical essay Confessions of a Convert (1913). This through the papal encyclical Leo XIII. Apostolicae curae increased doubts led to a turn to the Catholic faith. He stepped on September 11, 1903 in the Roman Catholic Church and was after successful studies at the seminary on 12 June 1904 in the Basilica of San Silvestro in Capite in Rome for priests ordained . In the same year Benson returned to Cambridge.

In 1904, shortly after his ordination as a Roman Catholic priest, Benson made a passionate friendship with the artist Frederick Rolfe, who was also converted.

In 1907, Benson moved to a house on Hare Street, where he carried out extensive preaching, popular missions, and spiritual leadership. A large part of his extensive literary work, which includes novels of historical and contemporary content, plays and apologetic works , also falls during this time . In 1907 he wrote his most famous work, the ending novel Lord of the World ( The Lord of the World ), which underwent many editions and translations and as an important precursor of the great dystopian applies novels of the 20th century.

Pius X appointed him in 1911 (“surplus”) secret chamberlain (today papal honorary chaplain ).

In 1914 the first signs of heart disease appeared and while serving a mission in Salford , he died of a heart attack from pneumonia in the bishop's house early that morning on October 19, 1914 .
