Emma Harriet Nicholson, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne (born October 16, 1941 in Oxford ) is a British politician ( Liberal Democrats , previously Conservative Party ).

Nicholson attended the Royal Academy of Music and received honorary doctorates from the University of North London, the University of Timișoara and the Academy of Economics in Bucharest . After first visiting professor at St Antony's College of Oxford University was, she later became an associate member. Nicholson worked as a software designer, systems analyst and computer consultant from 1962 to 1974, then became director of international development and from 1977 to 1985 was director of fundraising for the Save the Children children's aid fund .

Nicholson was vice chairman of the Conservative Party from 1983 to 1987. She represented the constituency of Torridge and West Devon in the House of Commons from 1987 to 1997. In 1995 she moved from the Conservative Party to the Liberal Democrats. In 1997 she was raised to a Life Peeress as Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne , of Winterbourne, in the Royal County of Berkshire, and has since been a member of the House of Lords for life. From 1999 to 2009 she was a member of the European Parliament .
