Life

Emma Josefine, daughter of the chief medical officer Franz Maier and his wife Antonie, geb. Bayer, grew up in Bamberg . In 1909 she married the human medicine specialist Heinrich Karl Emil Balthasar von Hoesslin (1878–1955). Hoesslin was, among other things, medical director of the Berlin-Lichtenberg Municipal Hospital and professor of internal medicine at the Humboldt University. The couple had an adopted son.

Even during their time in Berlin, the couple wanted to take care of needy children and care for young people. And on his deathbed, too, Dr. von Hoesslin expressed the wish that his assets should be used for a foundation committed to this purpose .

After the death of her husband, Emma von Hoesslin and Magdalena Haberstock, wife of the art collector Karl Haberstock , set up a foundation to restore the ceiling paintings in the Golden Hall of Augsburg City Hall that had been destroyed by the war . In 1961 she founded the Heinrich and Emma von Hoesslin Foundation :

According to the statutes, half of the foundation's funds are used ... to support particularly capable and less well-off students and to treat and / or properly care for needy children and young people in suitable facilities .

Emma Hoesslin was buried at the Westfriedhof in Augsburg. The gravestone was erected by the city of Augsburg in grateful memory of the donor couple. In the latter city, Von Hoesslin-Strasse commemorates Emma and Heinrich Hoesslin.
