Geographical location

history

The station building was completed in 1927 for the terminus of the Vitoria-Estella railway line coming from Vitoria-Gasteiz . The line was put into operation on September 23, 1927 and closed in 1967 .

building

The architect of the building was the engineer Alejandro Mendizabal Peña , who was responsible for building the track . Due to its importance at the end of the route, the building was laid out particularly splendidly, is considered the most splendid of the route and was the most expensive with construction costs of 183,544 pesetas . By choosing neo-Romanesque shapes for the building , he also referred to the Palace of the Kings of Navarre , a secular, Romanesque structure that has been preserved in Estella and dates from the 12th century. Thirdly, the entrance building was also intended as a homage to the Spanish dictator and Prime Minister Miguel Primo de Rivera , who carried the title of “Marquis of Estella”.

The station building has gently sloping tiled roofs. It consists of a central, three-storey structure on a rectangular floor plan, to which two four-storey structures, also built on a rectangular floor plan, are attached on both narrow sides. The walls show cuboids, windows and doors are closed with arches. The station building is the only thing that has survived from the railway systems in Estella.

use

The reception building is now used as a bus station and for municipal offices. This is where the Estella tourist information center is located.
