Empicoris culiciformis is a species of bug from the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae).

features

The mosquito-like bugs are 4.0 to 5.2 millimeters long. They have a curved rostrum. The front legs act as tentacles and are not used for locomotion. This makes the bug appear four-legged. In addition to Empicoris culiciformis , the larger Empicoris species E. vagabundus and the somewhat smaller species E. baerensprungi occur in Central Europe . Legs and antennae are ringed in black and white. In contrast to E. vagabundus , which has narrow black rings, the white and black rings in Empicoris culiciformis are approximately the same length. The species differs from E. baerensprungi due to the lack of a thorn on the scutellum . The connexive of Empicoris culiciformis has a light-dark pattern.

distribution

Empicoris culiciformis is widespread and not uncommon in Europe. In the south their distribution area extends to North Africa, in the east to Central Asia . The species was introduced in North America.

Way of life

Empicoris vagabundus is often found on building walls, on window sills and in attics. Field finds in tree hollows, under loose bark or in bird nests are rarer. The bugs hunt dust lice (Psocoptera), mosquitoes, beetle larvae and other small insects. Most outdoor finds are in the spring months of May and June. In Central Europe, it is likely that the adults overwinter .
