Some volumes of the Encyclopedia Americana

The Encyclopaedia Americana is the second largest printed universal dictionary in English after the Encyclopædia Britannica . As the name suggests, it is primarily aimed at North America . Therefore, coverage of American and Canadian history and geography ( United States and Canada ) is particularly extensive. The large number of glossaries contained in the encyclopedia is also remarkable .

The anniversary edition from 2004 (175th existence) comprises 45,000 articles with 25 million words and was written with the participation of 6,500 authors. It contains 9,000 bibliographies , 150,000 cross-references, over 1,000 tables, 1,200 maps and almost 4,500 black and white and color photographs. As the encyclopedia is being revised volume by volume, some articles are considered out of date. The Americana has therefore been published annually since 1923 for ongoing updates .

The Encyclopaedia Americana was founded by the German-American lawyer and political scientist Francis Lieber based on the seventh edition of the Brockhaus conversation lexicon (1827 to 1830). It initially comprised 13 volumes.
