EnergyBus is an open standard for all electrical components in light electric vehicles and other stationary energy management systems. It contains a communication and energy transmission bus as well as an associated connector system. The data transmission is based on the CAN bus, more precisely on the CANopen protocol. The data transfer is defined in the CANopen application profile CiA-454 and for members of EnergyBus e. V. and the CAN in Automation e. V. accessible. The original and main goal of the development was the LEV components, but EnergyBus is also used in stationary energy management systems. The first applications were implemented by Fraunhofer ISE.

EnergyBus is supported by a registered association (EnergyBus e.V.) and specified by the members and partners. Members are both individuals and manufacturers of electric bicycle components such as plugs, batteries, controls and drive units.

The current goal of the EnergyBus initiative is to create a standardized charging infrastructure for e-bikes , pedelecs and other LEVs (Light Electric Vehicle).

Use

EnergyBus offers the user a safe charger (without explosions and fires) for different battery types. With a DC voltage of up to 48 V and a current of up to 40 A, an output of up to 1.9 kW can be delivered. These are plug'n'play systems in which additional batteries or consumers can simply be plugged in. Thanks to the communication between the individual components, the energy transfer is only activated when it is ensured that all participants are working with the current voltage. A charger has been available since 2013 that can provide the battery charging voltage of up to 56 V and 10 A negotiated via the communication interface, almost continuously.

For component manufacturers, EnergyBus offers the advantage that its components are "compatible" with many other components. System integration becomes massively easier. In this way, the system integrator can offer the customer more at lower costs. The system offered can be upgraded, for example for an additional battery or new battery chemistry.

Ready-made software libraries are available for developing EnergyBus-compatible components.

Cooperations

EnergyBus e. V. has entered into a collaboration with the VDMA Forum for Electromobility E-Motive . Its aim is to define the necessary and desired properties of an "exchangeable, rechargeable battery" as used in various electrical systems.
