Engaeus lengana is a species of crayfish thatcan be foundin Tasmania . The special feature of these animals is that they are in a building living, the chimney-like outputs has.
Engaeus lengana inhabits the areas in northwestern Tasmania and was also found on Hunter Island . The distribution area in Tasmania runs along the north coast from Rocky Cape to Birchs Inlet in the south.
Occurrence and specific social behavior
Engaeus lengana inhabits coastal swamp areas, streams that flow through acacia forests, as well as the grass plains and also streams that flow through moist eucalyptus or rainforests. It is often found in or around bodies of water that carry water all year round. In most cases one can observe that Engaeus lengana occurs sympatric with Engaeus fossor , whereby this makes use of the much larger corridors of Engaeus fossor and their water storage and connects to these corridor systems its own corridors.
The same behavior was observed in Engaewa subcoerulea and Cherax crassimanus in western Australia, as well as in Tenuibranchirus glypticus and a Cherax species in southern Queensland . In these two cases, too, one species and its ducts are significantly smaller than the other two.
ID
No intersex animals of this species have been found so far . Males and females were caught in approximately equal numbers. The crustaceans measured had a carapace of between 1.0 and 1.8 cm.
pairing
Egg-bearing females have been found in the Rocky Cape and Welcome Swamp area in northwestern Tasmania. Males and females were discovered together in a system of ducts on Hunter Island . It is believed that mating occurs in October and the eggs develop over the summer.
