Engelbert Dörbandt

Engelbert Dörbandt (born February 2, 1949 in Berlin ) is a former German judoka who won four medals at European championships.

The 1.69 m tall Dörbandt fought in the light middleweight division (up to 70 kilograms) until 1976. After the reorganization of the weight classes, he fought in the lightweight (up to 71 kilograms). From 1971 to 1977 he won seven German championship titles.

In 1970 he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in East Berlin. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Dörbandt won his first two fights and then lost in the quarter-finals to Dietmar Hötger from the GDR. In the hope round he defeated Reto Zinsli from Switzerland and lost to Anatoly Novikov from the Soviet Union. Dörbandt took fifth place.

1973 Dörbandt reached the final at the European Championships in Madrid and was defeated by Dietmar Hötger. In 1974 he won a bronze medal at the European Championships and also bronze at the World Student Championships. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1978 he reached the final again and lost to Günther Krüger from the GDR.
