English hole
The remnant of an ancient arm of the river Leine in Hanover , which was largely filled in only in the 1870s, was called the English Hole .
The former watercourse probably got its name already during the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover , when allegedly "an Englishman with his carriage fell into this ditch ".
The English Hole was still found in the first half of the 20th century on the Schützenplatz outside the former New Gate . Traditionally, a stalls street set up during the Hanoverian rifle festival was also called the English Hole.
