The Schützenplatz in Hannover is a 10-hectare space in the district Calenberger Neustadt . It is located south of the old town not far from Waterlooplatz . Originally laid out and used as a parade ground for soldiers in a nearby barracks, it is one of the largest festival grounds in Germany.

After the unification of the rifle clubs of the old town of Hanover with those of the Calenberger Neustadt a rifle house was built in the Ohe according to the fourth design by Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves . It was inaugurated on July 15, 1827. The classical building stood roughly at the entrance of today's HDI-Arena and was destroyed by the air raids on Hanover in World War II. To the north of it was the old Schützenplatz. In the 18th / 19th The English Hole was located here in the 19th century .

With the construction of the Maschsee , an Ihme straightening was also carried out from 1934 to 1937 . The previous arch around the Lindener Ohe disappeared and the new Schützenplatz was created on the acquired site. In 1937 the first rifle festival was celebrated on the new square.

description

The square is located immediately north of the HDI-Arena and is bordered by the streets Bruchmeisterallee, Beuermannstraße and Robert-Enke-Straße (Arthur-Menge-Ufer until January 2011). The floor of the square is covered with paved roads. Access is through five large gates (counted clockwise):

  • Guild Gate (in the east)
  • Showman Gate (in the south)
  • Brewer's Gate (in the southwest)
  • Hanöversch-Tor (in the northwest)
  • Herrenhausen Gate (north)

The guild gate is the main entrance. The only massive and fixed building on the square is the "round part" (Rondell), in which a restaurant is located during the shooting festival. Other permanent buildings are located on the edges of the square in the form of toilet facilities and the entrance building at the guild gate.

Events

The square is particularly well-known for the Hanover rifle festival , which takes place in the summer and is the largest of its kind in the world. In spring, the Hanover Spring Festival, the largest spring festival in Lower Saxony, takes place. What is rather unusual for northern Germany is the tradition of an Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest Hanover , which has been taking place on Schützenplatz since autumn 1964, is the largest Oktoberfest in northern Germany. Because of these three large folk festivals alone, the square is visited by over 2 million people every year. Throughout the year, numerous other major events take place on the square, including the regular "Street Mag Show" as Germany's largest American Car, VW Bug and Harley Show. Furthermore, large circuses, such as the Circus Krone , regularly appear on Schützenplatz. The Schützenplatz also serves as the main car park for visitors to the neighboring HDI-Arena, where the home games of the Hannover 96 football club and other events take place.
