The Oktoberfest Hannover is a folk festival that has been taking place in Hannover every year since 1964 at the end of September / beginning of October . The festival, based on the Munich Oktoberfest, takes place on Schützenplatz and lasts 17 days.

history

In 1964, the Hanoverian harvest festival was held on Schützenplatz for the first time. This festival was developed to offer the visitors of the wrestling championships at the same place an additional supporting program. The name of the festival changed frequently in the first few years, but the theme always had something to do with harvest. After all, it was the Hanoverians themselves who gave the event the name "Oktoberfest". In order to differentiate itself from the original in Munich, the festival was officially called "Oktoberfest Hanover". The Bavarian theme gradually took up more space at the festival. Today the festival presents itself as a mix of Bavarian Oktoberfest and Lower Saxony harvest festival, with the focus now clearly on the Bavarian Oktoberfest theme. So now you can see more and more visitors in Bavarian costumes and lederhosen.

scope

With up to 600,000 visitors, the Hanover Oktoberfest is the largest of its kind in northern Germany. In Hanover, the Oktoberfest is the fifth largest open-air event, after the Maschsee Festival , the Christmas market , the Schützenfest and the Spring Festival .

Visitors enter the Oktoberfest event site through large-format gates on each side of the square, originally named after local breweries, such as:

  • Mansions Gate
  • Guild Gate
  • Hanöversch-Tor (formerly Wülfeler Tor and Wilkenburger Tor)
  • Brewers Gate
  • showmen -Tor

At the Hanoverian Oktoberfest there are an average of 120 showmen with various rides , festival tents , two roller coasters , Ferris wheel , wild water ride and the usual food and sales stalls. The stands form a 3,000 m long alley that leads across the square in a square. In 2009, a radio station called Oktoberfestradio Hannover 100.0 broadcast from the fairground for the first time . The event radio frequency 100.0 MHz was used.

Course of the Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest Hannover is opened every year by tapping the keg in the Marris festival hall. The barrel tapping is carried out by the mayor of the city of Hanover and is the prelude to the opening ceremony with guests from politics and business. Every Friday there are firework displays, each on a different topic. Wednesdays are family days with discounts on the rides and food stands. The program on Family Day includes the puppet theater, face painting and handicraft activities. The other program items include the dirndl competition, the Thanksgiving service and performances by various party bands and DJs. On the last Friday the lantern parade will take place with musical accompaniment.

Gastronomy and marquees

There are two large festival tents, five smaller tent systems and several beer gardens at Oktoberfest Hannover. The traditional drinks include the Lüttje Lage and the Hannoversche Festbier brewed by the private brewery Herrenhausen , which is only available at the Oktoberfest in Hanover.
